How to Install a 32-Inch Man Door in a Shipping Container
Adding a man door to a shipping container can make everyday access much easier, but the frame needs to fit the corrugations, seal properly, and remain square even when the container twists during transport.
In this video, Channing walks through the latest version of the Container Modification World 32-Inch Dual-Swinger Man Door and shows how the frame is assembled, how the rough opening is cut, and how the door is aligned and sealed. The new design is also much slimmer than the older 36-inch version and can be centered properly on a 20-foot container.
A More DIY-Friendly Door Frame
The latest frame design is built to make assembly easier for one person.
The side frame pieces help hold the header and footer in position before the rivets are installed, which makes the entire system more stable during assembly.
The Rain Drip is then installed on the top of the frame. Its position determines whether the finished door will be a left-hand or right-hand outswing.
Because the door slab and frame can be shipped separately, the system is well suited for DIY container modifications and e-commerce shipping.
Why the 32-Inch Door Fits Better
Standard shipping container corrugations are approximately 11 inches on center.
The 32-inch door requires a rough opening of about 33 inches, meaning the opening naturally spans three corrugations.
The older 36-inch Man Door required four corrugations, which increased the total frame width and often forced the door to sit off-center.
The new frame is approximately 35 inches wide compared with about 44 inches for the older system.
That nine-inch reduction allows the door to sit directly in the center of a 20-foot shipping container.
Cutting the Rough Opening
When laying out the opening, Channing recommends measuring from common reference points on the shipping container instead of relying on a level.
If the container itself is not level, using a level can actually cause the door to become misaligned with the corrugations.
The top structural weld is left in place, and the opening is cut directly above it to avoid unnecessary grinding.
When cutting the panel, small tabs are left connected near the bottom so the steel can hinge outward in a controlled direction.
Sealing the Door Frame
An automotive-grade Bulb Seal is installed along the frame.
This style of seal is useful because shipping containers can flex and twist during transportation. Unlike a rigid seal, the bulb can compress and return to shape as the container moves.
Sealant is also installed between the frame flanges and container wall and across the upper header to help prevent air and water intrusion.
The door should operate smoothly with no visible daylight around the frame before the final rivets are installed.
Installing the Hardware
The hinge side is fastened first because it carries most of the weight of the door.
Once the frame is positioned correctly, the latch side can be adjusted until the door gaps are even and the latch strikes directly in the center of the opening.

A stainless steel strike plate is installed to protect the galvanized frame and maintain the correct latch position.
