How to Install a Man Door in a Shipping Container Step by Step
Follow along as Channing installs a 32-inch Container Modification World Man Door Kit in a shipping container and walks through the entire process from start to finish.
This door kit is designed with DIY builders in mind. The frame uses laser-cut reference holes, reversible components, and a corrugation-friendly width that makes it easier to position and install the door accurately.
Tools Needed for the Installation
Before getting started, you will need a few basic tools.
An angle grinder is used to cut the rough opening in the container wall. A drill and rivet gun are needed to assemble and fasten the frame. A handheld riveter will work for a single project, although an electric rivet gun can make the process faster.
Safety glasses, gloves, a face shield, and a marker are also recommended.
The Container Modification World Door Kit includes the door frame hardware, hinges, latch components, and other required parts.
Assembling the Door Frame
The side frames are designed to hold the header and footer together during assembly, making the process much easier for one person.
Once the four main frame components are temporarily positioned, rivets can be installed to hold everything in alignment.
The supplied Rain Drip is then installed on the top of the frame. Its position also determines whether the finished door will be a left-hand or right-hand outswing.
Marking the Rough Opening
One of the biggest advantages of the 32-inch Man Door is how well it matches standard shipping container corrugations.
The rough opening is approximately 33 inches wide, while shipping container corrugations are spaced roughly 11 inches on centre. This means the opening naturally spans three corrugations.
Instead of using a level, measure from consistent reference points on the shipping container itself. If the container is not perfectly level, using a level can actually cause the door opening to become misaligned with the structure.
The top cut is made just above the existing weld, so there is no need to grind through the structural weld.
Safely Cutting the Container Wall
When cutting the opening, leave small tabs at the bottom of the panel.
These tabs act like hinges and allow the cut panel to fall outward in a controlled direction once the final cuts are made.
It is also best to cut along the bottom first before moving up the sides and across the top. This helps prevent the panel weight from binding the cutting wheel.
Installing and Aligning the Door
Once the opening is complete, the frame can be placed into the container wall.
A bulb seal is installed along the sides, while the upper frame tucks underneath the remaining corrugation.
Before permanently fastening the frame, make sure the door swings smoothly and the latch lines up with the centre of the strike opening.
The hinge side should be fastened first because it carries most of the door's weight. From there, the frame can be adjusted until the gaps around the top, bottom and sides are consistent.
Storm Chain and Final Sealing
The Container Modification World Door Kit also includes a Storm Chain.
Laser-cut holes in the Rain Drip provide the mounting location, making installation straightforward.
Sealant is applied between the side flanges and container wall, as well as across the header, to prevent water and air intrusion.
A stainless steel strike plate is also installed to protect the galvanized frame and keep the latch positioned correctly.
Why Use a 32-Inch Shipping Container Door?
The complete 32-inch Man Door frame is only 35 inches wide.
Compared to the older 36-inch door system, which required a frame approximately 44 inches wide, this reduces the overall footprint by nine inches.
