How to Install a Window and Man Door in a Shipping Container

These products are designed to make shipping container window and door installation easier for DIY builders. Laser-cut reference holes, corrugation-specific framing, and built-in rain protection help simplify the process while creating a clean, durable finished result.
Installing a Shipping Container Window Framing Kit
Container Modification World Window Framing Kits are designed around the corrugations of a shipping container.
The framing kit includes a corrugation cap that fits along the bottom of the opening and helps keep the cut corrugations straight and properly aligned. Once the frame is positioned, the cap can be riveted directly to the container wall.
Before installation, it is important to identify the top and bottom of the vinyl window. Drain holes along the bottom of the window determine its orientation.
Once the window is installed square within the frame, the supplied Rain Drip can be riveted into place.
Why the Rain Drip Matters
The Rain Drip is one of the most important parts of the Window Framing Kit.
Its upper edge tucks underneath the container corrugations, directing rainwater down and away from the window opening. This prevents water from rolling behind the frame and putting unnecessary pressure on the sealant around the window.
Closed-cell spray foam can then be installed directly around the vinyl window to create a continuous air and vapour seal.
Inside the container, the window is aligned with Container Modification World's strut framing system, with T-Brackets used to continue the framing around the opening.
Installing a 32-Inch Composite Man Door
The next step is installing the Container Modification World 32-inch Composite Man Door.
Traditional 36-inch man doors can require a much wider opening because shipping container corrugations are spaced approximately 11 inches on centre. This often results in extra framing material and can also make it difficult to position the door directly in the centre of a 20-foot container.
The 32-inch Man Door solves this problem by fitting the container corrugations more efficiently and creating a slimmer overall frame.
It also uses a composite insulated door slab instead of steel.
Why Use a Composite Door?
Steel door slabs can transfer outside temperatures directly into the interior of the container. In colder climates, this can lead to frost and condensation forming on the inside surface.
The composite door is filled with insulation and does not have the same continuous steel connection from the exterior to the interior.
This creates a better thermal break and helps produce a tighter, better-insulated shipping container entrance.
Getting the Door Gap Right
The Man Door frame uses laser-cut reference holes to help position and rivet the frame directly to the container corrugations.
Sealant is applied behind the frame before installation, creating a clean seal without needing a large exposed bead around the outside.
Once the four corners are temporarily pinned, the door should be opened and closed several times to confirm that the frame is square and the door gaps are even.
This is especially important before spray foam insulation is installed.
A shipping container should always be level before the doors and windows are finalized. Spray foam can lock the structure into position, so any twist or uneven door gap that exists beforehand may become permanent.
